The Price Tag for Wisdom

by Brian Flewelling on July 07, 2020

“Wisdom is supreme therefore get wisdom; though it cost all you have, get understanding. Proverbs 4:7

Sometimes the wisdom of God is concealed behind the clouds of illogical circumstances and irrational decisions. God asks us to trust him, even when it doesn’t make sense. The God of abiding light wraps himself in darkness and it feels all wrong to us. The Apostle Paul declared that the wisest among men are foolish to God and the most foolish of God’s counsels are beyond our scholars.

We solemnly swear that we will run after God. Yet we trip over this stumbling block--we want to be in control of the decision. We want to curate the facts and decide for ourselves what’s best and what makes sense. This is the test—will we pay every cost for wisdom? Will we risk our reputation on the Spirit’s seemingly impetuous decision making; are we willing to shipwreck into hardships if he leads us there; will we seek His wisdom if it means our financial or social ruin? If we haven’t counted these costs then our fears and our logic will repulse us from entering the door of God’s kingdom?

By this standard, the allegations of men’s courts indict us with these disrespects – impulsive; superstitious; wreckless; irrational. It is in the heavenly courts and by the heavenly standard that we are acquitted by wisdom. Wisdom is proved right by her actions, not by your rational decisions. Wisdom isn’t found in your metrical analysis. Wisdom is the Holy Spirit leading us to trust our heavenly Father, as a little child would, even when it doesn’t make sense.

This is the glory of God, that he would pitch his tent among the broken things. This is the love of God, that he would give all with no return. The authority of God is that he would lay all things down, and the wisdom of God is that his greatest plan for man’s salvation is the most difficult and painful to himself and to us.
