The Father's Joy

by Matt Kauffman on June 13, 2023

I love backpacking and immersing myself in nature for a few days. There is nothing quite as exhilarating as venturing into a forest or admiring a breathtaking view. I usually go on these trips with a group of friends, a band of brothers. We hike together and share stories about our families, work, and funny experiences, while we bond around the campfire.

A few years ago, my son developed an interest in my overnight trips. We planned a trip together, marked it in the calendar, and made it happen. He took his school backpack and filled it with essentials. The experience was unlike any other I've had before. My son had an incredible ability to detect every sound the forest had to offer. He'd stop and ask, "Dad, what is that?" Then after stopping and listening, we'd proceed on our way. Two of his favorite parts were starting a fire and carving a stick into a sword to defend our camp from any intruders. We enjoyed instant mashed potatoes and chicken from a packet, which tasted amazing only because we were out on the trails.

I started a tradition of setting aside time each year to go on hiking trips with my son, and it has been a truly enriching experience. During these trips, we engage in deep, meaningful conversations that strengthen our bond as father and son. My son has also taught me to appreciate the beauty of God’s creation and to take notice of the small wonders around us, such as a majestic tree or a camouflaged snake on the forest floor. Even a curious squirrel chirping in protest as we approach has become a precious moment to treasure.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Psalm 19:1

Often, I tend to fixate on the destination, disregarding the journey in between. I sometimes feel like I'm losing my sense of awe and purpose as I age. Again and again, however, spending time with my three children helps me gain a fresh perspective. I believe that God has a unique plan for each member of my family, and it's essential for me to spend time with Him to understand their purpose. By doing so, I can confidently guide my children toward the path that God has for them.

For the LORD gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding. Proverbs 2:6

Know that every hug you give, every joke you share, every moment you listen patiently, every time you take a deep breath and see things from your child's perspective, every time you model for your child how to handle anger responsibly and show up with integrity, you're shaping your child into a person who has been valued and who will learn to give that same value to others. And in that moment, they will make you proud.

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth. 3 John 1:4

As fathers, we play a crucial role in our children's lives. The moments we spend engaging in activities like playing with dolls or building Legos are invaluable. Personally, when I reflect on my childhood, my fondest memories involve fishing with my dad: sitting on a boat, learning how to cast a lure, and reeling in the next "big one." Those timeless moments will stay with me forever.

As fathers, let’s value every opportunity to make enduring memories with our children. We possess the ability to accomplish amazing feats, so let us wholeheartedly embrace the incredible journey of fatherhood!
