God is a Healer

by Brian Flewelling on May 19, 2020

Jeremiah 30:17 “I will restore you to health and heal your wounds.”

Doctors are generally trusted in our communities. Their intent is for the wellbeing of their patients. They want to see maladies cured and pain mitigated so that people can live healthy lives. Even more so, mothers gently nurse their children’s wounds and bandage up the skin torn by stones and earth.

Likewise, God is a healer! It is not just what he does, but who he is. Life and compassion flow out of him. He desires our wellbeing, and that’s what makes him good! Often our bodies need just as much attention as our souls. Jesus went around healing physical conditions and declaring that it was a sign that God’s kingdom was breaking in. David said, he “forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases” (Psalms 103:3); Isaiah said, “he took up our infirmities and carried our diseases” (Isaiah 53:4); and in Jeremiah God promised, “I will restore you to health and heal your wounds.”

We still live in a world stampeded by sin and it’s punishing affects. The current pandemic is evidence the world is broken. However, the broken and contrite soul can confidently ask for healing and restoration and believe that it is the natural right of the citizen of God’s kingdom. That kingdom is both already here and is not yet fully here. There is a certain mystery to the timing of God’s healing--sometimes he does--sometimes he doesn’t yet. Yet we can always trust he is good, and we can always ask and believe that if He doesn’t heal us now, one day we will experience the fullness of his life and redemption.

The creator does not relish the destruction of anything he has created. Keep asking for physical healing for yourself. Keep praying for the power of God to heal others. And keep interceding for the spiritual healing of the thousands of people who don’t yet know the compassion of our savior. He is a great healer!
