The Impossible Seed

by Brian Flewelling on December 21, 2021

Luke 2:7, 16

She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger… they found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.

Revelation 20:11

Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them.

Have you ever held a seed in your hand and pondered the miracle of life? This tiny thing—can give me tomatoes next summer?! This seed can grow a cabbage, or a bean, or a bush? In years to come, this one barley seed can fill my entire field with barley?! This brown little thing can grow into an endlessly expansive Sequoia tree still growing and maturing three hundred years later!? Crazy.

A seed contains the full potential of the life that it is. What if that seed was God?

Jesus, the baby; he is the seed of God’s perfect presence of love in the earth. God planted himself in the earth to germinate, mature, and spread his life to all who had cast him out. He spreads what he is: unlimited love, infinite goodness, and the perfection of wisdom. He is wrapping himself around everything. He is filling every field and family with his compassion and knowledge. One day, the heavens and the earth will be fully saturated with his love. They will strain to contain him. There will be no room left for anything but him—God—Infinite Treasure—Perfect Peace—Communing Mind—perfecting and sustaining all things!

What is sin? Sin is nothing! It is the lack of existence outside of God; the choice to live outside of what is real and true. Sin is a ghost. When the light reaches it’s maximum saturation, there will be no darkness left for the ghosts to hide in.

This Christmas I remind you to let the seed of God’s perfect presence mature in your family. Let the feast of his joy drive out insecurity, and defensiveness, and sarcasm from your conversations. Let the clarity of his truth and his goodness displace every confusion and resentment and competition. Let his will and his desire satisfy you and clarify your purpose and vocation on the earth.

Let’s decide to live this Christmas in his pure light. His holy sweet light is all that will remain!
